Helen M. Larkin, 92, of Waukon, formerly of rural Harpers Ferry, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Fr. Bernard Grady officiating. Burial was in St. Pius at Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Helen Marie Dahl was born November 3, 1910, in Decorah, the daughter of John and Nikolena (Johnson) Dahl. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1927. Following school, she worked for the telephone company and J.C. Penney, both in Decorah. On June 5, 1952, she married Aloysius Larkin at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. They farmed together in the Cherry Mound area for many years. Helen continued to live on the farm until December of 2002, when she moved to Waukon.She was a member of the Golden Girls card club, enjoyed reading and gardening, and loved to spend time with her family and friends. She also had a fondness for animals, particularly her pet cats.Survivors include a daughter, Leann (Rex) Van Dyke of Manchester and their son, Bobby; and a son, Peter (Dee) Larkin of New Hampton and their children, Ryan, Sean, and Kelly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Aloysius, and an infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Larkin.Casketbearers were Ryan, Sean, and Kelly Larkin, Bobby Van Dyke, Jim Ryan, and Don McCormick.
