Mary F. Byrnes, age 96, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Northgate Care Center after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 24 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hanover, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at St. Mary's, Hanover. Hanson Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Mary Francis Reddy was born December 22, 1906, in rural Post Township to Patrick and Eva (Beall) Reddy. She attended rural grade schools and, following graduation and normal training from Waukon High School in 1925, she taught in many rural schools in Allamakee County.On July 14, 1936, she married Garland Byrnes at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. They farmed in Hanover and French Creek Townships and lived there for 58 years, retiring to the Waukon Living Center in November of 1995. Mary entered Northgate Care Center on May 1, 2003. Mary enjoyed her role as wife, mother, and grandmother, showering her family with quilts, rolls, and canned goods. She was a former 4-H leader and a member of St. Mary's Hanover, where she served as historian from 1972 to 1992.
Survivors include her children, Pat (Carol) Byrnes of Waterloo, Elizabeth (Robert) McMillan of Stanley, Dennis (Judy) Byrnes of rural Waukon, Margaret (Rick) Oldham of Cedar Rapids, Roger (Rita) Byrnes of Waukon, and Ed Byrnes of El Paso, Texas; one sister, Catherine Byrnes of Waukon; 27 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; one granddaughter, Mary Ann McMillan; one brother, Bill; and two sisters, Cecelia and Margaret.Casketbearers were Mike Byrnes, Andy Byrnes, Brad Byrnes, Matt Byrnes, Lyle Byrnes, Lonnie Byrnes, Jim McMillan, John McMillan, and Patrick Oldman.
