Robert "Bob" Bakewell

Robert W. “Bob” Bakewell, 64, of rural Waukon, died July 30, 2011 at the family farm where he lived in rural Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Robert W. “Bob” Bakewell was born in Waukon November 7, 1946 to Joe and Luella (Schulte) Bakewell. He attended St. Patrick Grade and High School, graduating in 1964. He served our country by joining the Army Reserve. Bob married Colleen Goetting October 21, 1972 at St. Leo the Great Church in West Salem, WI.
Bob retired from Trane Company in La Crosse, WI after 44 years. During many of those years, he worked on the family farm, which he dearly loved. His dream was to retire and move back to the family farm. Bob was a very considerate and generous man. He lovingly and compassionately cared for his wife, Colleen. His unfailing devotion to her over the past four years allowed Colleen to live in peace and comfort on the farm. Bob took on the responsibilities for the farm and taking care of his mother, which allowed her to stay on her beloved farm well into her 90s.
Bob was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. He was very devoted to his faith. Bob enjoyed car racing, going to tractor pulls and a good visit with his family and many friends. He enjoyed the daily problem solving that comes with life on the farm and was always developing innovative and creative ways to “make something from nothing”.
Bob will be remembered as an extremely hard worker, a kind and gentle man who always thought of others before himself. He was a very stoic man who never complained about his illness or asked “why me?” He leaves us a legacy of love of family and friends, his belief in the power of prayer, and consideration for all whom he felt were less fortunate than him. We all have been blessed to have known him.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen and his mother, Luella, both of Waukon; three brothers, Ralph (Kathy) of Onalaska, WI, Ken (Bonnie) of Hokah, MN, and Jim (Joyce) of Ossian; a sister, Jan (Bill) Howes of Brownsville, MN; and nieces and nephews, Sheila, Kathy, Debbie, Vicki, David, Dianne, Colleen, Dan, Lori, Jill, Ann, Paul, Lee and Ian, all of whom loved their Uncle Bob. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe; brothers Larry and Ron; and nephew Steve.
Honorary casketbearers are nieces and nephews Ann, Colleen, David, Debbie, Dianne, Ian, Jill, Kathy, Lee, Lori, Sheila and Vicki. Casketbearers are Earl Schulte, Tyler Stortz, Brian Stortz, Paul Bakewell, Dan Howes and David Howes.
