Gretta May Cahalan, 94, of Waukon, formerly of the Quad Cities area, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Family graveside services will be held at a later date.
Gretta May Cahalan was born May 3, 1917 in rural Waukon, the daughter of L. Earl and Winnifred (Kuehne) Huffman. As a young girl she worked for her father at the Rossville meat locker business he operated. Gretta married John Woodrow “Woody” Cahalan. They farmed for a time near Harpers Ferry and then moved to the Quad Cities area in 1952 where she worked a short time for a laundry and then at a toy factory. The last several years she has lived in Waukon. Gretta enjoyed gardening and handiwork, including crocheting and making afghans.
Survivors include three children, Cheryl Neels of Carbon Cliff, IL, and Jan Donahue and John “Jack” (Janet) Cahalan, both of Waterville; along with many grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Woodrow, who died in 1992; an infant son, Earl James; and a brother, Vernon Huffman.The Waukon Standard, August 10, 2011
