Margie Howe
Margie M. Howe, 86, of Waukon, died Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Margie Marie Howe was born April 26, 1925 in West Union, the daughter of August R. and Mabel (Guider) Anderson. She attended St. Patrick grade and high school, graduating in 1943. She also took classes at Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque. November 24, 1949 she married Kenneth Howe at St. Patrick Church in Waukon. They lived in Chicago for two and a half years where she worked as a seamstress. They later moved back to Iowa where Margie again worked as a seamstress at Jacobi’s. Later she worked at the County Home, and operated the Green Valley Golf Course.
Margie was a member of the American Legion auxiliary of the Lawrence D. Anderson Post. The post was named after her brother who was an officer aboard the USS Arizona, and died at Pearl Harbor. Margie enjoyed writing letters and cards, gardening, cross stitch, knitting, cake baking, volunteering at the County Home, canning produce from her garden, day trips and vacations to Canada and Arkansas. She also followed the Cubs and Hawkeyes and helped start the Bingo games at St. Patrick Church of which she was a lifelong member. She shared her strong faith with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Howe of Waukon; her children, Jim (Mary Alice) Howe of Woodstock, IL, Gary (Debbie) Howe of Bethany, OK, Karen (Pat) Whalen of Lansing, Mari (David) Glassmaker of Lake City, MN, Donald (Barbara) Howe of Waukon, Richard (Denise) Howe of Waukon; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Anderson of Citrus County, FL and Wanda Anderson of Waukon. She is preceded in death by her parents; a child in infancy; four brothers, Robert O., Lawrence D. “Bud," Paul, and Ralph “Rocky”; and a sister-in-law, Betty Anderson.
Honorary casketbearers are grandchildren and their spouses. Casketbearers are Eric Whalen, Bradley Glassmaker, Peter Whalen, Nathan Glassmaker, Nicholas Howe, Daniel Howe and Andrew Howe.The Waukon Standard, August 3, 2011
