Rites Are Held for H. Christofferson

Funeral services for Herman A. Christofferson were held Friday, February 22, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. Rev. Dennis E. Morey officiated. Pallbearers were Leo Christofferson, Jack Backhaus, Robert Enyart, Dennis Mork, Glen Bente and Ed Lauerman. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, was in charge of arrangements.

Herman Alton Christofferson, the son of Walter and Mary Olson Christofferson, was born September 12, 1902 on a farm in Franklin Township, Allamakee County. He passed away February 19, 1980, at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville at the age of 77 years.

He attended the rural schools in Clayton County. On December 23, 1931, he was united in marriage with Rita Minger. To this union two children were born. They farmed in this community until February, 1961, when they moved to Postville. In the following years, he worked as a carpenter.

Herman was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and served as an elder for 12 years. He was a 50-year member of Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge and a past master; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron for 12 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anna, Mrs. Harry Bente of Elkader and Clara, Mrs. Fred Bente of Elkader and Velma, Mrs. Hollis Enyart of Postville; and seven brothers, Henry, Elmer, Elbe, Louis, Harvey, Leonard, and William.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; a son, Don of New Providence, New Jersey; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Jean) Bacon of Monona; four grandchildren, Robert Bacon of Ossian, Steven Bacon of Postville, Julie Christofferson of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jeffery Christofferson of New Providence, New Jersey; one great-grandchild, Cory Bacon of Postville; and a sister, Mrs. Alice Backhaus of Postville.
