Dorothy Jean Hagen, 73, passed away at her home in Fredericksburg Tues. morning, July 17, 2001.
Funeral services were held Fri., July 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg. Burial took place at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Sparta, WI, at 1:30 p.m. Sat., July 21.
Jean was born March 29, 1928, in Sparta, WI, the daughter of Oscar and Myrtle (Nichols) Baumbach. Jean attended elementary school at St. John's Lutheran Church School in Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School in 1945. She worked as a secretary at the Lutheran hospital in LaCrosse, WI.
Jean was married to Robert G. Hagen Sept. 28, 1947. The couple raised their family four children on a dairy farm near Waterville. Jean was a loving and devoted mother, active in her church, and was well known in her community for her love of baking and making decorated cakes.
In 1994, Jean moved to Fredericksburg, where she opened and operated Jean's Sweet Shop, specializing in "homemade" baked goods (cinnamon rolls and buns) and sandwiches. She retired in 1999.
Jean enjoyed fishing and sailing with her sons, and her baking. She had become a "seasonal sports fan," especially enjoying baseball and NASCAR racing.
Jean is survived by her children and their spouses: Jeff and Kelly Hagen of Howards Grove, WI, Ricki Lee and Nilsa Hagen of Flowery Branch, GA, Cindy and Jim Hobelsberger of LaCrescent, MN, and Kristi Hagen of Fredericksburg; 14 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; three sisters: Virginia and H. B. Behrens of Kenosha, WI, Luella Steele of Sparta, WI, and Eunice Rigg of Crystal Lake, IL; and eight nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents.
