Death of a Pioneer Mother

Eliza Short-Whalen, one of French Creek township’s earliest residents, passed away at her home Oct. 20, 1920, after a few days illness. She was born in the City of Dublin, Ireland, in the year 1840, and came with her parents at an early age to this country, and lived for a short time in New York city. Later they moved to Lansing, Iowa, where she was married to Thomas Whalen and they settled on a farm in French Creek which had been her home ever since. Her husband’s death occurred 32 years ago.

To this union were born thirteen children, one of whom died in infancy, (the remaining twelve are Thomas of Hope, Idaho; Lawrence of Plaza, N.D.; Mrs. Jas. Riley of Waukon; Mrs. M. G. Tenney of Minneapolis; James of Juliaette, Idaho; Mrs. John Ray of New York City; John of Minneapolis, Peter, Anna and Joseph at home; George of Waukon, and Mrs. A. O’Donnell of French Creek. All were present at the funeral except Thomas and James.

Funeral service were held Saturday morning at Lycurgus with solemn high mass by Fr. Whalen of Rockford, Iowa, nephew of the deceased, assisted by Fr. McNamara and Fr. Roach, after which the remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Six nephews acted as pallbearers.

~Notes: Mrs. James Riley was Johanna Whalen Riley, Mrs. M(artin) G. Tenney was Elizabeth Whalen Tenney, Mrs. John Ray was Rose/a Whalen Ray, Anna Whalen later married John Connor, and Mrs. A(nton) O’Donnell was Alvaretta Whalen O’Donnell.
Fr. Whalen was James Whalen, son of Patrick Whalen and Julia Regan Whalen.
Eliza Shortt Whalen’s parents were Patrick Shortt and Bridget Lyons. The second “t” in Shortt seems to be used variably in later generations of that family.
