Funeral services for Hugh R. Conway, age 77, retired farmer from Harpers Ferry, Iowa, were held at 11 a.m. on June 29 at Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford, in Allamakee County, with Father Donald Hawes, Father Cletus Hawes, and Father Tegeler officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home of Lansing, Iowa in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were his eight sons.

Hugh R. * See NOTE BELOW *, Son of Hugh and Anna (Madden) Conway, was born June 29, 1912 in Spokane, Washington. On June 12, 1940 he married Alice Kernan at Immaculate Conception Wexford Church. They lived on a farm in rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa. He was active in church, community, and civic affairs, serving as a 4-H Leader, and was on the Farm Bureau and Eastern Allamakee School boards, parish council, and extension council. He was also interested in Indian lore and history of the community, including Mt. Madden, the landmark located on his farm.

Hugh Conway died June 26, 1990 at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Joseph Conway, an infant grandson, and a brother Leo Conway.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; 8 sons, James Conway, Daniel Conway, and Hugh Conway, all of Lansing, Iowa, Leo Conway of Big Rock, Illinois, Patrick Conway of Castalia, Iowa, Michael Conway and John Conway, both of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, and Raymond Conway of Cambridge, Iowa; 3 daughters, Mary O'Neill of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, Ellen Nierling of Monona, Iowa, and Rosalie Riggerger of Lacona, Iowa; 33 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen "Kay" Weil of Burlington, Wisconsin.

NOTE: This obituary listed his name as "Hugh R. Conway" but in the obituary for his son, Leo Mark Conway, his name is listed as "Hugh Francis Conway".
