John C. Howes - 1914-1999

Memorial services were held March 24 at Milton Funeral Home, Milton, West Virginia for John C. Howes, former Allamakee County, Iowa resident. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, rural New Albin, Iowa, in Allamakee County.

John C. Howes, son of Frank and Jesse (Scott) Howes, was born January 10, 1914 in Hannibal, Missouri. John served in the U.S. Navy for three and a half years and in 1949 he married Lorain Olsen of Chicago, Illinois. In later years, John worked in the Ameristeel business with his son, William Howes in Hurricane, West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorain, a sister, Jessie Anderson, and two brothers, Francis Howes and Albert Howes.

Surviving are three son, Charles Howes of Holliston, Massachusetts, Scott Howes of Louisville, Kentucky, and William Howes of Hurricane, West Virginia, and a daughter Margaret Heard of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and 7 grandchildren.

NOTE: It is not known when his parents moved to Allamakee County, Iowa from Missour but John and his siblings all attended and graduated from the Waukon High School. His sister Jessie lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and his brothers, Albert Howes and Francis Howes continued to live in Allamakee County.
