Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)A memorial service will be held Monday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa for Helen Leona Newton, age 71, of Waukon, Iowa. Rev. Larry Olson will officiate at the service. Burial will be in the Edgewood Cemetery in Edgewood, Iowa.
Helen was born October 1, 1918 to David and Lottie (Cheney) Shingledecker in Maquoketa, Iowa. She attended country schools in the Edgewood area. On February 27, 1937 she married Lloyd M. Newton at the Methodist parsonage in Manchester, Iowa. They lived in Edgewood, Iowa until 1941, moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa and in 1945 they moved to Waukon, Iowa. She worked with her husband at Goodrich Produce in Waukon, Iowa from 1945 to 1960. She was also the activity director at the Allamakee County Home for five years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, Iowa.
Helen passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 1990 in the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, who died November 12, 1988, and a brother Harry Shingledecker.
She is survived by her son, David Newton of Lansing, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, Dylan Newton and Levi Newton; a sister, Lois (Jim) Wathen of Urbandale, Iowa and a brother Wayne Shingledecker of Richmond, Indiana.
