Funeral services for Helen Virginia Curtis, age 74, of Waukon, Iowa were held at 11 a.m. Monday July 7 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Gary Rumph, Dan Schmitt, Dennis Shepherd, Matt Shepherd, Bob Winters, Brian Mooney, and Gene Hitchcock. Honorary bearers were Blake, Taylor, and Caitlin Troendle, Tyler Schorg, Cody and Dylan Schmitt, Nathan Rea, Darcy, Abby, and Katie Winters, Stacey, Stephanie and Shannon Rumph and Beth Mooney.

Helen died of cancer Thursday, July 3, 1997 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. She was born December 3, 1922 in Brookfield, Missouri to Homer and Sarah (Libby) Ross. She attended Brookfield area schools and worked for several years for the Brown Shoe Company in Brookfield. On October 20, 1945 she married Arthur Curtis in Kansas City, Kansas. They moved to McGregor, Iowa in 1956 and in 1973 they moved to Waukon, Iowa where she has lived since. For many years Helen did babysitting for many area families before retiring in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 3 sisters, Agnes Caldwell, Frances Turner, and Mary Jacobs; and 3 brothers, Charles Ross, Herbert Ross, and Harley Ross.

Surviving are 1 daughter Carol Cole and 1 son, Larry Cole, both of Waukon, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Edna Brill of Brookfield, Missouri, and Esther (Bill) Ward of Waukon, Iowa; and a brother, Virgil Ross of Marceline, Missouri.
