Memorial services for Bernice E. Hawbaker, age 76, of Waterloo, Iowa, were held Tuesday, August 3 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, Iowa with burial in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa. Bernice died Saturday, July 31, 1999 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born May 20, 1923 in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Turk) Hansmeier. Bernice graduated from Waukon High School in 1942 and moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she was employed by Ray-O-Vac Battery. She later worked at RMR Defense Plant as an inspector. Bernice was a member of the First Congregational Church in Waterloo, Iowa. On May 6, 1944 she married Tommy Hawbaker in St. Louis, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Roger Hawbaker and Terry Hawbaker, and a sister, Delpha Hansmeier.

Surviving are her husband, Tommy; a step-daughter, Shirley Blanchard of Germany; 6 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Hansmeier of Ventura, California, and a sister Ruth Miller of Waukon, Iowa.
