Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Alice Backhaus were held Tuesday, January 16, 11 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, Iowa was in charge of the services. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa. Casket bearers were Vince Peterson, Dan Klahn, Gary Brockway, Tennis Mork, Roger Christofferson, and Glenn Bente.
Alice Louise, daughter of Walter and Mary (Olson) Christofferson, was born February 4, 1904 in Franklin Township, near Luana, Iowa. She died Sunday morning January 14, 1990 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed October 18, 1931 at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. Garten. Alice attended the rural schools near her home. On December 12, 1928 she married Albert Backhaus at Elkader, Iowa. The couple had 2 children. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township. After Albert's death, Alice moved to a house in Postville and was employed for many years as assistant cook at the Community Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa, the Grand Meadow Country Club and the Rebecca Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Albert, who died July 17, 1961; 8 brothers, Henry Christofferson, Elmer Christofferson, Elbe Christofferson, Louis Christofferson, Harvey Christofferson, Leonard Christofferson, William Christofferson, and Herman Christofferson; 3 sisters, Clara Bente, Anna Bente, and Velma Enyart; a granddaughter, Darla (Ellis) Reinhardt and a grandson, Dennis Ellis who died at birth.
She is survived by a son, John "Jack" Backhaus, and a daughter, Marilyn (Darwin) Ellis both of Postville, Iowa; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
