Forest Dale "Toey" Kelly, age 82, of Postville, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. He was born on May 20, 1928 in Waukon, Iowa to Creston "Pinger" and Thelma (Garrison) Kelly. He grew up on the family farm near Rossville, Iowa. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1945 and Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana on March 25, 1965 in the Life Insurance Marketing Institute division.
Toey was married to Evelyn Dorothy Franck on June 15, 1946 at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Waukon, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Toey owned and operated Kelly's Tavern in Ossian, Iowa, from 1948-1952, then sold it to his parents. He went back to the farm 1/2 mile east of Rossville. The registered farm name was "Sunny Side Up". He had dairy, hogs, sheep, and Herefords, but in 1953 he quit dairy and hogs to devote more time to raising Registered Herefords, selling bulls and breed stock. He was very proud of his Herefords and sheep.
Toey stopped farming in 1961 but remained on the farm until they moved to Postville in 1967 where he was a Real Estate Broker, American United Life Insurance Agent, and Crop Hail Insurance agent, which he continued doing until January 2006 when his health failed. He entered the Good Samaritan Home in May 2006, joining Evelyn who had entered in February 2006.
Toey was a member of the Northeast Iowa Realtors Association and served as President. He taught several classes for real estate seminars and in-services. As an insurance agent and real estate broker, his philosophy working with people was, "I would rather miss a sale than misrepresent one." He also served as treasurer of the Postville Commercial Club. He was a Kiwanis Club President, and member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. Toey enjoyed dancing, music, traveling, and playing his favorite card games of poker, pinochle, euchre, and 500.
Toey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Kelly on March 1, 2010; granddaughter, Keri Lee Kelly on November 18, 2010; two brothers, Donald D. Kelly, James L. Kelly, and son-in-law, Donald Roberts.
