Verna Engle

Verna G. Engle, resident at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, passed away from natural causes January 15, 2011. Verna had also been a resident of South Crest Manor for almost five years.
Verna is survived by her son, Lowell Engle of Harpers Ferry; along with 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Everett L. Engle, in 1992; and her sons, Norman Engle in 1997 and Leroy Engle in 2005.
Verna was born in Glasgow, MO May 16, 1911. She moved to Hampton as a young girl and grew up, graduated from high school and was married there. The family lived there during the Depression and moved to a farm in the Waterloo area during WWII. In 1945, the family moved to Tripoli, where Verna was active as a leader in the local 4-H chapter. All three boys graduated from high school in Tripoli.
In 1953, Verna and Everett moved to Madrid, where Everett became the custodian of the State 4-H camp and Verna became the cook. Verna later cooked at Iowa State University and some will remember that she ran the 4-H kitchen at the Iowa State Fair for several years. They retired from the 4-H camp after 25 years.
Verna had a passion for quilting and produced over 120 quilts in her life. Those quilts are distributed among family and friends. Verna will be remembered by her friends in South Crest as well as at Northgate for her imitation of rooster crows.
