Norman Rosendahl

Norman H. Rosendahl, 88, of Waukon died Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Norman Henry Rosendahl was born May 24, 1922 in Houston County, MN on the farm of his parents, Anton and Clara (Sivesin) Rosendahl. He attended Dorchester rural schools. From June of 1943 until January of 1946, Norman served in the U.S. Army. He was a Tech 4 with the combat engineers and saw duty in New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines and earned the Bronze Star for his service. Following his discharge, he returned to northeast Iowa where January 29, 1947 he married Alpha J. Sires at the St. John’s Lutheran parsonage in Waukon.
Norman retired in 1984 after a 48-year career with the Allamakee County Highway Department; he used horses in his early years to do some of the maintenance.
Norman was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to fish, especially in the area trout streams. He also enjoyed working on cars and loved old-time music; he could play the harmonica, guitar and the auto harp. His family came first and he often played music at family events.
Survivors include six children, Gloria (Chuck) Teeter of Hayward, WI, Barbara (Garon) Blunt of Decorah, Marjorie (Ron) Wurtzel of Waukon, Teletha Springsteen of Waukon, Gary (Kari) Rosendahl of Waukon and Gail (Susan) Rosendahl of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Shirley) Rosendahl of La Crescent, MN; and a sister, Stella Burmester of New Albin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers; four sisters; a son-in-law, Jim Springsteen; and a great-granddaughter, Haley MaeAnn Smith.
Honorary casketbearers were the Allamakee County Crew. Casketbearers were Justin Wurtzel, Jason Wurtzel, Jim Springsteen, John Hancock, Kurtis Smith and Michael Rosendahl.
