N. Etta Hecker

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, for Mrs. R. M. Hecker, who died at the Community Memorial Hospital Saturday, April 3, following a lengthy illness. The Rev. Dick Harberts officiated.

N. Etta Hecker was the oldest daughter of John Smith and Eunice Eaton Dresser. She was born in Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa, June 18, 1882. She was a graduate of the Postville high school class of 1899, attended college at Upper Iowa University and graduated from the State Normal School at Cedar Falls. She taught school for several years at Guttenberg and New Albin.

On November 26, 1913 she was united in marriage to Robert M. Hecker and they enjoyed 49 years together before his death May 7, 1961. Etta had lived in the same home since 1917 until the past two years when she had been a resident of the Postville Good Samaritan Center. She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Postville.

She leaves no immediate survivors, her parents, her husband, two brothers, Burl and Lawrence and two sisters, Ina and Iva, having preceded her in death. There are four nieces and two nephews.

Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.

The above obit is an exact transcription of the original that appeared in the Postville Herald, April 7, 1976. In that obit her name is given as N. Etta Hecker. What the 'N' stands for was not given. In light of the notes from Connie Ellis below, it is possible that the typo occurred in the original obit.

I noticed when I was looking at the posted obituary for Etta Hecker, that it contains an error and may be confusing to someone who doesn't know the family.

Mamie Etta was born 18 June 1882 in Postville, Iowa on the Dresser farm, west of Postville. She died 3 April 1976. She was the second child born to John Smith Dresser and Eunice Eaton. She and her husband Robert Hecker are buried in the Postville Cemetery area F - 644. Robert and Etta did not have any children.
