Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Fern Busness, age 90, were held at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, Waterville, Iowa at 1:30 p.m., Monday November 7. She died at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa on November 5, 1988. Rev. Mark DeGarmeaux and Vicar Richard Tragasz officiated. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing, Iowa. Martin Brothers Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Gary and Donald Johnson, Merle Puhrman, Charles Weipert, Clark and Eddie White. Honorary pallbearers were George Balekos, Norbert Breitbach, Lester Busness, Alfred Hansmeier, Norman Leiran, Robert McLeese, Harry Sander, and George Sieglaff.
Fern Hessel was born June 28, 1898 in Libertyville *state unknown, Iowa?* the daughter of Frederick and Josephine Hessel. She graduated from Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College. She taught rural schools until her marriage to Joseph Johnson on August 6, 1920. He died August 1, 1956. On July 31, 1960 she and Carl Busness were married. He died November 10, 1986. She was a member of the East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and various church groups. She was a cook at the Waterville School for 20 years before she retired.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, 2 sons Donald Johnson and John Johnson; a step-daughter, Mrs. Cletus Kelly; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Donald Johnson; 4 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; 4 brothers, Earl, Howard, Irvin and Ralph Hessel and a sister, Mrs. Carl Mueller.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Kelly of Waukon and Betty White of rural Waukon, Iowa; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. George Balekos, Monona, Iowa and Mrs. Bryce Hasper, Erskine, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Johnson, Caledonia, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Harriet Schumacher, Guttenberg, Mrs. George Sieglaff, Waterloo, Iowa and Mrs. Norbert Breitbach, McGregor, Iowa.
