Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Lloyd Merle Newton, age 73, of rural Waukon, Iowa died Saturday, November 12, 1988 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, November 14 at Martin Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Olson conducting the 10 a.m. services. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery in Edgewood, Iowa. Serving as casketbearers and conducting military gravesite rites were the members of the American Legion, Ralph D. Waters Post 62 of Waukon, Iowa and the Edgewood, Iowa Post.
Lloyd was born May 2, 1915 in Anamosa, Iowa to John and Lucina Briggman Newton. He attended school in Anamosa and Newton. On February 27, 1937 he married Helen Shingledecker at the Manchester parsonage in Manchester, Iowa. He served in the Navy during WWII and was a cook and baker at Pearl Harbor from March 1944 to December 1945. From 1945-1960 he worked at Goodrich Produce in Waukon, Iowa and then 20 years for the Allamakee County maintenance department. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bowling, woodworking, and music. At his 50th wedding anniversary dance, he played the accordian.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Weslie, and Gerald Newton. Surviving are his wife, a son David of Lansing and a grandson, Dylan.
