Thea Sando, age 79, died Sunday October 16, 1988 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa. Funeral
services were held Wednesday, October 19 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Judd Larson conducted the 1 p.m. services and Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Jim Neverman, Duane Meier, Virgil Duvel, Wilbur Stoen, Ron Winters, and Dennis Winters.

Thea was born February 3, 1909 in Waterville to Erick and Margaret (Thompson) Sando. She attended Allamakee County School and finished high school in South Dakota. She received a B.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She did graduate work in social welfare at the University of Chicago and updated her education with courses at the University of Iowa.

She had been employed as a public welfare worker, child welfare worker, and medical social work consultant. She worked in the Chicago area first and worked in Pope County, Illinois during the 1930's in rural assistance programs. She moved to Pueblo, Colorado to work in public health and from 1956-1972 she worked as Director of Social Services at University Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa. She also spent a year in public health work in Norway.

She was a member of Old West Paint Creek Church and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City, the Lutheran Club, Norwegian Club, and Association of Retired Citizens. Since 1972 she had been actively working with senior citizens. In 1981 she was chosen by Heritage Committee on Aging as the Most Outstanding Senior Citizen of Johnson County, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Hanson and Mabel Sanderson.

Surviving are five nieces: Mildred,(Mrs. Clarence Webster), Ella, Mrs.(Rueben Meier), Bernice,(Mrs. Milton Duvel), and Rose Marie,(Mrs. Delbert Winters), all of Waukon, Iowa and Stella, Mrs. Herman Wiest of Waterloo, Iowa. She is also survived by 18 grand-nieces and nephews.
