Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services were held Thursday, October 20 at St.Patrick's Catholic Church for Joseph Clare O'Meara, age 68, of Waukon, Iowa. He died Sunday, October 16, 1988 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The Revs. Lechtenberg, Hiller, Hutchinson, and Plamondon conducted the services. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Hanson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. A memorial service was held at St. Rita of Cascia Church in Aurora, Illinois. Casket bearers were James B. Ward, John Burke, John Campbell, John Kerndt, William Kerndt, and Pat Crowley. Honorary pallbearers were John Oberman, William Ready, Frank Hager, and Leo Devitt.
Joseph was born December 28, 1919 in Waukon to James D. and Cecelia (Fitzgerald) O'Meara. He graduated from Waukon High School and attended Loras College for a year. On June 26, 1942 he married Eleanor Kaveny in Chicago, Illinois. They lived in Chicago,Illinois, Oregon, Illinois, and Aurora, Illinois before moving to Waukon, Iowa. He was a retired maintenance engineer and a member of St.Rita's in Aurora, Illinois as well as St.Patrick's Church in Waukon. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Paul, Ralph, and Raymond O'Meara.
Survivors include his wife, a son, Daniel O'Meara; a daughter, Mary Ann Blackburn; 2 grandsons, Gregory and Daniel; and 3 sisters, Mary Catherine Crowley, Justine Cecelia O'Malley, and Gertrude Ann Utterbeck.
