Funeral services were held Sunday, November 26 for Carl Theodore Berge, 79, of rural Waukon, Iowa. He died Wednesday, November 22, 1989 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Lynn Groe conducted the 1:30 p.m. services held at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Carl was born May 18, 1910 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Olaus and Sophie (Ask) Berge and attended Glenwood area rural schools through the eighth grade. In 1935 he married Ella Ellingson. She died February 6, 1968. On December 11, 1971 he married Jean (Folsom) Evans at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.

For over 50 years, he owned and operated Berge's Repair, where he worked on bicycles, lawn mowers, glass repair, sharpening and carpentry. He was well known for his fine work with wood, and his cabinetry-making ability.

He was a member of St. John's Church where he held numerous offices and was chairman of the building committee when the new church was built. He was a former member of Oakland Cemetery Board. Lutheran Brotherhood Board, Veterans Memorial Hospital Board, and Good Samaritan Center Board.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, four step-children, Neil Evans of Independence, Iowa, Larry Evans of Kingston, TN, Grant Evans of Houston,, TX, and Gayle Evans of Dorchester, Iowa; 15 step-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Grant (Stella) Grinna of Decorah, Iowa and three brothers, Norman and Walter, both of Decorah, and Otto of Brazoria, TX.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, a sister Thelma, and two brothers, Roy and Irvin. Casket bearers were Keith Mason, Kenneth Brandt, Mark Berge, Dave and Clark Stilwell, and Curtis Schoenthal. Honorary pallbearers were Eugene Yohe, Adolph Ruen, Roy Loven, and LeRoy Schmidt.
