Funeral services for Mabel Elizabeth Martins were held Saturday, January 17, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Reverend Julius L. Peterson and the Reverend David R. Nelson officiated. The Schutte Funeral Home of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery, casket bearers were Gary Schlitter, Delbert Timmerman, Eugene Schlitter, Richard Schlitter, Daniel Schlitter and Willard Schlitter.

Mabel Elizabeth Martins, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Schlitter was born September 7, 1909 in Linton township, Allamakee, Iowa. She passed away January 14, 1981 at the Community Memorial Hospital, Postville.

On October 7, 1931 she was married to Gerwin Martins at the home of her parents. They farmed in Clayton County. She joined St. John Lutheran Church at Luana and was a member of the Ladies Aid for a number of years. She was also a member of the Grand Meadows Home Garden Club. Upon retirement in 1955 they moved to Postville and became members of St. Paul Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Carlton, two brothers, Leslie and Milton, a sister, Mrs. Grover (Hazel) Timmerman, an infant brother, Franklin, and an infant sister, Helen.
Surviving are her husband, Gerwin; four daughters; Mrs. Roger (Mary Jane) Russett and Mrs. Daryl (Norma) Sander, both of Postville, Mrs. Harry (Lucille) Griffiths of Raleigh, NC, and Mrs. Darold (Anna) Lamphier, Washburn, IA; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two brothers; Carlton Schlitter of Monona and Willis Schlitter of Waukon.
