JESSE KELLY SHOOTS SELF

Jesse Kelly, 78, of near Rossville, Iowa ended his life August 11, 1946 at the home of his son, Creston, shortly after noon Sunday, by shooting himself with a 22 calibre rifle, with death taking place more than an hour later. Mr. Kelly had finished eating his dinner with his family and excused himself from the table. A few minutes later the Creston Kelly Family heard a shot and found Mr. Kelly lying on the floor in the entry way leading from the kitchen with a bullet wound in his forehead. The rifle was lying under his body.

Dr. J.H. McCullough of Waukon was immediately summoned and attended the patient until his death about an hour later. Dr. McCullough who had treated Mr. Kelly for years, told County Coroner Clark Rominger that Mr. Kelly had been depressed for two or three years. His wife had passed away ten years ago and he was never able to get over her death.

Jessie Kelly was the son of William Morton Kelly and Sarah (Lewis) Kelly. He was born in Mason City, Iowa where his father owned a mercantile business. When he was a youth, his parents returned to Paint Creek Township to their farm where he attained manhood and spent his life. He married Angie Leona Robey on February 19, 1891 at the home of her parents, Calvin and Isabelle Robey in Rossville.

Mr. Kelly is survived by his son, Creston Calvin Kelly and his wife, Thelma. His five grandchildren, Lorraine Staub, Gwen Slitor, Donald D. Kelly, Forest D. Kelly, and James Lee Kelly. He has two great-grandchildren, Truman Slitor and James Slitor. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Marie Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Earl Reed Kelly in March of 1944, and his siblings, Emily,Nettie, Alice, Mary, Benner, Daniel, Moore, William, and Fredrick Kelly. He was also preceded in death by one grandson-in-law, Stanley"Buddy" Fox who died in a haying accident in November of 1944.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Martin's Funeral Home at Waukon with Rev. A.H. Grossheim officiating. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Pallbearers were Lyle Mitchell, John Rumph, John Huffman, Cloyd Pettit, Walter Gast, and Dare Walters.
