Mrs. Catherine Phillipi
The death of this estimable, aged lady occurred at her home in this city early Sunday morning, after an extended illness. She was born April 3, 1831 at Achern, Baden, Germany, her maiden name being Catherine Hostert. She came to America in 1853, during which year she married Michael Phillippi at Chicago, Ills. The following yer they came to Iowa and settled on the farm then known as the Mathis place, two miles north of Lansing. There she resided until about fifteen years ago, when she moved to this city. Her husband preceded her in death twenty-nine years ago. To them were born three girls and four boys, Mrs. Catherine Bakewell, Mrs. Lena Bakewell and Mrs. Mary Cooper now deceased; Michael and Joseph of St.Paul and Matt of this place; and John, who died when about three years old. She is also survived by thirty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. All the children were present at the funeral.
Mrs. Phillippi was among the pioneer mothers of the county, of whom only a few are now left. She was a good neighbor and true friend, and had a wide circle of acquaintanceship, all of whom will learn with sorrow of her demise and extend sympathy to the bereaved ones left to mourn.
The funeral took place yesterday morning at 9 o'clock from Immaculate Conception Church and after a Requiem High Mass the remains were laid to rest in Gethsemane Cemetery. The pall bearers were four of her grandsons, Arthur, George, and Stewart Cooper and Wm. Bakewell and her two youngest sons-in-law, Frank Morgan and Wm. Scholtes.
