Henry Rettinger

Funeral services will be held this Wednesday afternoon for Henry J. Rettinger, 82, who passed away early Sunday morning at his home on Upper Main Street. He had been in failing health for several months and lately returned home from a LaCrosse hospital. He was born July 20th 1873 at Lansing a son of Catherine Rippberger and Christian Rettinger one of a family of 9 children. He attended the rural schools and for years farmed in Lansing township. On October 28th, 1896 he was united in marriage to Augusta Batteen who survives as do their two children. Mrs. Orren (Myrtle) Bartheld of Bell Flower, Calif., and Ervine of Lansing. Other immediate survivors include his sister, Mrs. George Troendle, of nearby Lansing and two brothers, Sam and Albert Rettinger of Long Lake, Minn., besides 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
After many years employed as the bulk plant agent for the Standard Oil Company Mr. Rettinger retired more than fifteen years ago. He became widely known throughout Allamakee as a courteous and accommodating workman and a large number of acquaintances will be sorry to read of his death. He served for many years as town marshall and night watch.
Reverend Albert Kinzler of the German Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral services at two-thirty at the Burke Funeral Home with special hymns "In the Garden" and "Going Down the Valley" sung by the Misses Ada Bauman, and Lorna Cavers with organist Mrs. Theodore Schott accompanist. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were life long neighbors and friends Walter Bailey, Tade Weipert, Carl Wagner, Jim McClurg, Vince and Clarence Spinner. Among out of town relatives attending the services were his brothers from Long Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bartheld, of Rogers, Minn. His daughter Mrs. Oren Bartheld and family have been here a couple of weeks.
