Jacob I. Marti, 82, retired postal clerk, died Wednesday, March 15 in a Mason City nursing home. He had lived in Mason City for 57 years and made his home 652 1st. St. S.E.
Mr. Marti was born July 1, 1884, on a farm near Lansing in Allamakee County, son of Jacob and Sarah (Iverson) Marti.
He grew up on a dairy farm and attended country schools.
In 1908 he enrolled in the Southern Minnesota Normal and Business College at Austin, Minn and was graduated from a business course.
He was married to Pearl Wendel June 29, 1910 at the farm home near Lansing. They moved to Mason City and he began his employment as regular clerk at the Mason City Post Office June 26, 1911. He retired as clerk in the postal savings and money order department after 45 years of service.
After his retirement, he was employed seven years by the United Home Bank of Mason City. In later years in spent most of his time on his lifelong hobby of gardening.
Surviving are his wife Pearl, a daughter, Miss Bernice Marti, Mason City; three sons, Milton J. Marti, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Curtis E. Marti, Hopkins, Minn.; and Jay R. Marti, New Ulm, Minn; and 10 grandchildren.
A sister, Mrs. Alfred (Anna) Petrehn, Austin, Minn., and a brother, Phillip Marti, Waukon, also survive. He was preceded in death by several half brothers and half sisters.
Mr. Marti was a member of the Retired Civil Service Employees Association.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Major Memorial Chapel. Dr. George Truman Carl, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family prefers any memorials be given to the First Methodist Church.
Attending the funeral from Lansing were: Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dee, Donald Dee, Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Dee, Mr. and Mrs. George Aschom; Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Marti and family, Mary Marti and Mrs. Clara Herman of Waukon.
