Mae Viola Hanson

Mae Hanson, 99, of Waukon, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Pastor David Andreae officiating.

Casket bearers were Stanley Iverson, Paul Arneson, Howard Sande, Milton Iverson, Sanford Morken and Lee Stegen.

Honorary Casket bearers were Chester Finholt, Jerome Kroshus, Josh Hausman and Wilbur Stoen.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon handled arrangements.

Mae Viola Hanson was born at her grandparent's home in rural Locust, Iowa June 22, 1901, to Lewis and Mathilda (Quanrud) Hanson.

She was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church and attended Iowa River School District rural school as well as Valders Normal Training School in Decorah.

She worked as an apprentice dress maker in Decorah for several years, helping on the farm at home, and did domestic work for area families.

Mae Hanson moved to Waukon in 1946 where she worked as a clerk for Schultz Bros. Variety Store from 1952-1971.

She was a life-long member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church, where she served as organist for 25 years, sang in the choir, was a member of Hannah Circle and participated in various other groups.

She was also a member of Waukon Sr. Citizens, and enjoyed handiwork, quilting, knitting, crocheting and sewing.

Mae Hanson liked reading, playing cards and solving word puzzles. She loved to visit with and be around people and enjoyed her trips to the Waukon Sr. Meal-site.

Survivors include a sister, Luella Kiesau of Waukon, five nephews and many grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Mae Viola Hanson was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harris Hanson.
