"Gustave Laabs, 86 was found dead in his home on South Front Street, (Lansing, IA), last Wednesday afternoon by Joe Rice who had stopped in at the home on a neighborly call. He is presumed to have passed away a day or so before quite suddenly as he was fully clothed and laying on the floor in his bedroom.

He was born in French Creek township on April 4th, 1881 and as a young boy came with the family to make their home in Lansing, having resided here more than 75 years. In August of 1912 he was married to Jesse Dikeman who preceded him in death in 1926, as did a teenage daughter Gladys and three infant children. Left to mourn his passing are three daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Esther) Stubjaer, Lake Preston, S.D.; Mrs. Art (Arlene) Lunde, LaCrosse; Mrs. Raymond (Lenore) Fink, Lansing. Other immediate survivors include one brother, John, Eureka, Calif.; one sister, Rose Streeser, Emery, S.D. along with seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. His children were little girls when their mother died but he cared for them as an indulgent father. He has lived alone the past 12 or 14 years and was known for his expert machine work and accommodating business manner. He was a member of the Lansing Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Burke Funeral Chapel at two o'clock with the Rev. J. Paul Stevens officiating and saying the final prayers at the graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery where he was buried beside his loved ones gone before. Vocal soloist was George Aschom and Mrs. Kenneth Hanson accompanist. Casket bearers were Robert Goodell, Irvin Strub, Carl Slindee, Tade Olloff, Everett Stahl and Harold Severson.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the Gustave Laabs funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Dale Foster, Woodman, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Brent Darling, Chillicothe, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fink, Muscatine; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wilson, LaCrosse, Wis.; James Fink, Great Lakes Naval Base, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Irv L. Rohde, Caledonia, Minn.; Mrs. F.A. Stubjaer and family, Lake Preston, So. Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lunde and family, LaCrosse, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fink, Pascagoula, Miss. arrived too late to attend the funeral services.
