James T. Burke, 70, of Waukon died of a heart attack on Monday, August 7, at his home.
Mr. Burke was born March 11, 1908 at Hanover to Michael and Ella Byrnes Burke. He was educated in the rural schools and was a farmer in the Hanover area until retiring and moving to Waukon in November of 1967. He married Rita Hancock on February 6, 1942 in Missouri. She survives, along with four daughters, Mrs. Howard (Judy) Meinel of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mrs. Richard (Mary Kay) Delphey of Plano, Illinois; Mrs. Dean (Betty) Staggemeyer of Eitzen, Minnesota; and Mrs Thomas (Peggy) Teff of Dorchester; two sons, John of Ontario, California and Pat of Waterloo. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and seven sisters; Mrs. John E. (Mary) McCormick; Mrs. Leo (Rita) Liddiard, and Mrs. Hank (Gert) Schulte, all of Hanover; Sister Mary Jude of Aurora, Illinois; Mrs. Earl (Catherine) Griffin of New Albin; Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Grohall of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Mrs. Ray (Monica) Sweeney of Waukon. Also surviving are two brothers, Michael of Waukon and John of Naperville, Illinois. A son, Lyle James preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon. The Rev. Msgr. Fredric Heles officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover.
Pallbearers were Jerry Sweeney, John Joe McCormick, Gary Schulte, James Liddiard, Dan Griffin and Brian Burke. Hanson funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
