Howard Thies

Howard Daniel Thies, 90, of Waukon, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, at 11 a.m., at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating.

Casket bearers will be Jack Hager, Al Hager, Jerry Daugherty, Robert Smith, Randy Nagel and Darcy Broszeit.

Interment will be at the Oakland Cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Howard was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Lake Benton, Minn., the son of Louis and Freclove (Eastman) Thies. He started school in Minnesota but at an early age moved with his parents to the Waukon area, where he attended rural Jefferson Township schools.

He married Delia Invick Palmer in 1933. Delia died in 1970. Daniel married Eula Roffman Jan. 29 1972, at the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon.

Howard worked as a farmer and also ground feed for other area farmers. He also was a mechanic at the Allamakee Community School District bus barn for many years.

Howard was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and 500, fishing, working with cars, music and dancing, and going out to eat.

Survivors include his; wife, Eula; one son, Allan and Jan Thies of Red Wing, Minn.; two step-daughters, Dorothy and Fred Broszeit of Postville and Alice and Donald Hager of Waukon; a step-son, Leo and Donna Nagel of Decorah; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Florence Hennessey and Emma Miene, both of Waukon; and three brothers, Leonard and Bernice Thies, and Frank and Arlene Thies, of Waukon, and Elmer and Helen Thies of Galena, Illinois.

Howard Thies was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Delia; his sister, Minerva Frink; his brother, Louis Thies; and a grandson, Eric Thies.
