Mrs. Wilhelmina Altenkirk
Was born in Waldeck, Germany, June 23rd, 1822, and died at Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 15th, 1921, aged within a few months of ninety-nine years.
She came to America with her parents when she was 11 years old; they were shipwrecked and went ashore at Jamaica, where they remained two years. They then went to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where she was married to Dr. Charles Atkenkirk in 1843 and moved to Iowa, where she spent the most of her life near Postville. She came to California in 1913 with her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Parker. During recent years Mrs. Altenkirk has not been able to leaver her home, but up to her eighty-first year she walked one and a half miles to church and back every Sunday. Her mind was bright and she took a cheerful, optimistic interest in the progress of he world.
She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Parker, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nephews and nieces, among them being Mrs. Matilda Nazette and Mrs. Louise Tangeman, formerly of Postville.
The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
Mrs. Altenkirk had the distinction of being the oldest woman in Long Beach.
The pall bearers were Carl Holter, Herman Webb, Elmer Courson, Henry Luhman, August Meier and Hans Christofferson, all of Postville, who happened to be in Long Beach at the time of her death.
Those in attendance at the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Parker, Mrs. W. A. Olson, Mrs. Alec Olson and Mrs. W. H. McAllister of San Pedro, Calif.; Oscar Parker, Alhambra, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Parker, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Parker, Los Angeles, Calif.; A. E. Parker, Venice, Calif.
In this connection the family wish to thank the friends from Postville who were in attendance, and all who were so kind and thoughtful.
