Bethel King, 88, of McAlester, Oklahoma, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at McAlester Regional Health Center.
Funeral services were held Nov. 4 at Mills Chapel with the Rev. jack Shamburger officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele, MO.
Born June 19, 1911, she was the daughter of Cleveland Justice and Minnie Ethel (White) McCormick. She was raised on a cotton farm in Holland, MO, and while growing up, was a dedicated student and had a long range goal of achieving a career in the field of education.
She graduated from high school in Holland, MO and attended Southern Baptist College in Boliver, MO for two years. She married Azel King on Dec. 28, 1932, and continued to teach school while they both finished their degrees in education at Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. They became a successful teaching team in Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and Alaska. They were adventurous in their careers and Alaska was the perfect place to pursue these desires.
After nearly 38 years of teaching, they retired in Carlsbad, NM and then to be closer to relatives, they moved to Timber Lake Estates in McAlester in 1973.
Upon the death of her husband, she moved to Burgundy Place and later moved to Van Buren House. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl (James J.) Berens of Oakland, OR; granddaughters, Lori Sue Royce of Seattle, WA, and Valerie Stilwell of Eugene, OR; great granddaughters, Nicole Fix, Jamie Fix and Alizaire Lewis; a sister, Cara Foster of Postville, Iowa; and brothers, Charles Stanley McCormick of St. Louis, MO; Dr. C. J. McCormick of Monet, MO; Joe McCormick of Atlanta, GA and Bud McCormick of Montgomery, AL.
