JOHN FRED BECKER 1870-1936
John Fred Becker was born in Ludlow township on June 9, 1870, and as a young man he chose carpenter work and painting and decorating as his life's occupation. Mr. Becker was a very ambitious man and always proved to be very skillful in his handiwork. He spent 11 years in Minnesota, two years in California, and 24 years in Dubuque.
Besides his regular work, he found great pleasure and spent much time in collecting antiques, Indian relics, old coins, and stamps, and many other items of interest. Two years ago his health commenced to fail, which caused him to retire from his labors. After spending a year of quiet and restful life in the home of his sister, Mrs. Wm. Klemme here in Ludlow, he had partly regained his strength and was able to return to his own quarters in Dubuque where he died suddenly on November 20, at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 11 days.
His brothers and sisters who survive to mourn his passing are: Simon Becker, Madison, Wis., Paul Becker, New Ulm, Minn., Geo. Becker, Dubuque, Mrs. A. J. Goulette, Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Wm. Krumme, Ludlow, and Mrs. Henry Bechtel, Waukon, all being present at the funeral excepting Mrs. A. J. Goulette. Besides these he leaves cousins and a host of friends to mourn his passing. He was never married.
The remains were brought here on Sunday noon, accompanied by a few friends and funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. in the Salem church of which he was a faithful member for nearly 40 years. Services were conducted by the Rev. DeBuhr, pastor of the church and interment was made in the cemetery near the church. The pallbearers were Chas. Klepper, Henry Duvel, Julius Bauercamper, Albert Snitker, Ed. Becker and O. J. Sanderman.
Mr. Becker was greatly interested in hunting and so he and several of his friends from Dubuque had come here a week ago to hunt in west Ludlow for three or four days, making their headquarters at the Henry Klepper home and at that time had visited his friends here, returning to Dubuque on November 15. He will long be remembered as a true friend by those who have shared many days and years with him in Ludlow township.
