Cemetery records show that two of Michael and Kathryn Whalen Manning’s sons died within one week in 1918. Thomas L. Manning died December 20, 1918, and Leo M. Manning died December 26, 1918.

Death notice from January editions of the Allamakee Journal newspaper reads:

Thomas Manning

The saying “Death loves a shining mark” was surely exemplified in the case of Thomas Manning, who passed away Friday morning after a short illness of pneumonia. Deceased was a young man of the finest character, a noble young man in every sense of the word, just on the threshold of life with every prospect fair before him, possessing health, wealth, mental ability and a cheerful, sunny, helpful disposition that made friends of all who knew him. His father, Michael Manning, died a few years ago, and he is survived by his mother (nee Catherine Whalen), and four brothers, Joe, Leo, Kern and Will, and several aunts, uncles and cousins, who will ever mourn the loss of one so dear to them. He was laid to rest Saturday morning in the shadow of the old Wexford church where he faithfully and dutifully worshipped through the happy days of his childhood and young manhood.
