Cemetery records show that two of Michael and Kathryn Whalen Manning’s sons died within one week in 1918. Thomas L. Manning died December 20, 1918, and Leo M. Manning died December 26, 1918.
Death notices from January edition of the Allamakee Journal newspaper reads:
Leo Manning
Death has again invaded the Manning home and taken another dear son and brother, Leo, aged 20, who died Thursday afternoon of pneumonia. Like his brother Tom, who died the previous week, he was physically, mentally and morally a splendid specimen of young manhood, honorable and upright, giving promise of leading a useful life and benefitting the community in which he lived. He was laid to rest Friday morning, after Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul. The widowed mother, Mrs. Michael Manning, and the three remaining brothers have indeed in the double bereavement a grief that is hard to bear with resignation, and words cannot express the sympathy felt for them by the rest of the community.
