Obituary – Neil Manning

Funeral services were held at St. Ann’s Church, Harpers Ferry, Tuesday morning at nine o’clock for Neil Manning, who passed away Saturday evening at his home here following a 16 month illness. Father J. J. Costelloe offered the Requiem Mass and burial was in the family lot in the cemetery at Wexford.

Deceased was born Dec. 17th, 1885 on a farm in the Wexford vicinity, a son of the late John and Margaret Mahoney Manning, pioneer settlers of that community. He was educated in the rural schools and on Mary 31st, 1911, at Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford, was married to Mary Hawes, by the late Father Laffan. No children were born to them and survivors are his wife and three sisters, Mesdames Henry Burke, Michael J. Gavin and Nellie Revoir. A brother, Thomas, preceded him in death.

He was engaged in farming in Lafayette township until about 8 or 9 years ago, when he sold out and for a time was employed in La Crosse. After a year or so in that city they moved back to Lansing and then to Harpers Ferry, where he built a gas station which he and his wife operated for several years. He was courteous and industrious and made a wide acquaintance in the Harpers vicinity.

Among the out of county relatives attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Mark Valley, Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Neyens, of Dubuque. Pall bearers were his six nephews, Clair Gavin, Charles Burke, Mark Valley, Francis Revoir, Norbert and Cyril Hawes.
