Passing of Lafayette Pioneer
Mrs. John Manning passed away at her home in Lafayette township, Friday morning last, after an extended illness, the immediate cause of death being pneumonia.
Deceased was born at Breshire Falls, Canada, July 19, 1852, the daughter of Mary Desmond and Cornelius Mahoney, and came to Allamakee with them in the early days, making her home in Lafayette and Taylor townships until her marriage November 23, 1875, to John Manning, who survives her with four of the five children born to them, one son, Thomas, aged six months, dying December 10, 1889. Those surviving are: Mrs. Henry Burke, Lansing; Mrs. M. J. Gavin, Mrs. Ed. Revoir, and Neal, all of Lafayette township. Five sisters and one brother also survive her as follow: Mrs. J. J. Fitzgerald, Sioux Falls, S. D. ; Mrs. A. Kean, McGregor; Mrs. M. F. Ryan, Harpers Ferry; Mrs. J. F. Guider, Bridget and James, all of Lafayette.
Mrs. Manning was a good wife and mother, a kind neighbor and friend and had the proud distinction of being the most popular and best loved woman in the Wexford community, being an especial favorite with children and the younger people. She was a devout Catholic and, of course, died fortified by its last rites and in the hope of a blessed immortality.
The funeral Monday was from Immaculate Conception church, Wexford, at nine o’clock in the morning, Father O’Sullivan, the pastor officiating. The large attendance testified to the esteem in which this truly good woman was held. May her soul rest in peace.
Note: Maggie Mahoney Manning died January 24, 1930. Obituary is from the Allamakee Journal newspaper of January 30, 1930.
