Death of J. M. Barthell 1830 – 1902

John Michael Barthell was born in Onsbach, Bavaria, Germany, on the 18th day of August, 1830 and died at his home in Waukon on the 7th day of March, 1902, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 19 days.

He was christened in early infancy in the Lutheran church and reared under the influence of that creed.

He immigrated to the United States in the year 1847, when only 17 years of age, and settled in Rensselaer Co. New York, where he resided until 1851 when he came to Winneshiek county, Iowa. After residing there for 15 years he removed to this county where he has since resided. He was engaged in farming all these years except the last two, which he has spent in Waukon, and much of the time as an invalid.

In 1837 he was married to Martha M. Page, who, together with ten children survives him. The children are: Mrs. Sarah J. Fagrie of Flandreau, S.D.; John W. of Inwood, Iowa; Jonathon W., Mrs Anna A. Steinbach, Charles H., George P., Mrs. Minnie W. Meier, Michael J., Benjamin F. and Myrtle L., all of this county. He also leaves two brothers, William and George of Decorah, and one sister, Mrs. Hartbauer of Lansing. Two children, Herman and William, died in infancy. To the living relatives may be added 31 grandchildren. Mr. Barthell united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church of Waukon February 24, 1876 and retained his relations with that church until death. He was a man widely known to the citizens of Allamakee and Winneshiek counties for his business energy and ability, and also for his strict integrity.

He was at all times a kind husband and father, doing that which he conceived to the best for the united and effectionate (sic) family which grew up around him.

The many business transactions with the people, mostly farmers, with but little friction or hard feelings speaks will for his fair dealings and accommodation, and leaves him boats of friends who will miss him. The large audience gathering through the rain and mud to pay the last sad respects to his memory spoke louder than words of his worth and of the esteem in which he was held by the community at large. The funeral services were held at the C. P. church, the pastor being assisted by Rev Crowder of the M. E. church.
