DeElta Heins
DeElta Alys Heins, of Luana, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. She was 79.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 30, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Ramona Everman, organist, and Don Sabbann, soloist. Casket Bearers were Tyler Heins, Austin Haire, Dillon Haire, Aaron Ohloff, Seth Ohloff, and Chris Mangelsen. Honorary Casket Bearers were Roger and Ellen Bechtel, Robert and Shirley Brinkman, LeRoy and Colleen Darby, Don and Sharon Drahn, Becky Fritz, Dr. Vernon and Helen Hanson, Russ and Juanita Loven, Don and Mary Lou Moore, Don and Delores Sabbann, Robert Schultz, Dr. Les and Jean Tappan, Donna Thompson, and Ralph and Fran Thrower. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
DeElta Alys (Buraas) Heins was born August 5, 1929, on a farm in Marion Township, Clayton County, south of Postville, to Alfred and Norma (Thoen) Buraas. She was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. DeElta attended a rural school near Clermont, two years of high school in Clermont and graduated from Postville High School in 1947. She attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year with the intention of becoming a kindergarten teacher.
On August 27, 1950, DeElta was married to Don Meyer Heins at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Don and DeElta were the proud parents of two daughters. They farmed in Clayton County from 1950 to 1977, built a house on the Tri-City Golf Course near No. 7 tee in 1977, and lived there until 1996. After 1991, Don and DeElta wintered in Osprey and Sarasota, Fla., returning to their summer home in Luana each year.
DeElta was a devoted farm wife for many years. In the late 1970s to early 1980s, she owned and operated the Kaleidoscope in Postville. She had been a para-professional at the school, working one-on-one with a special needs child. She also worked at Casey's. DeElta enjoyed playing cards and dancing. She had a flair for decorating and took pride in her homes. She was a loving mother and aunt, grandmother, and now, a great grandmother. She loved children and animals as well, often times dog (and cat) sitting for others.
DeElta was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, the Women of the ELCA, P.E.O. Chapter FT and several bridge clubs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Norma (Thoen) Buraas; a sister, Fern Gericke Kephart; brothers-in-law, LaMont Gericke, LeRoy Duwe, Frank Tehel, and Elmer Radloff; a niece, Lynda Gericke Martin; and a nephew Leo Tehel.
DeElta is survived by her husband, Don; two daughters, Jamie (Lyle) Schulte, Shueyville, and Jill (Mike) Haire, North Port, Fla.; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Chris) Heins Mangelsen, Tyler Heins, Austin Haire, and Dillon Haire; a great-granddaughter, Gracyn Mangelsen; a niece, Laurel (Dean) Ohloff, Postville; two great-nephews, Seth Ohloff, Ames, and Aaron Ohloff, Naples, Fla., and a great niece, Arica Ohloff, Coralville; a sister, Shirley Blume, Milwaukee, Wis.; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Radloff, Monona, Dorothy (Ray) Suckow, Postville, Ramona (Clarence) Everman, Monona; and countless other nieces and nephews.
