Muriel Helen Corrine Bakkum, 89, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 10th, at 11:00 AM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Muriel Helen Corrine Bakkum was born on November 27, 1918 in rural Waterville, IA. Her parents were Herman N. and Josephine (Nelson) Iverson. Muriel was baptized and confirmed at the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. She graduated from Waterville High School and took teacher's training at Waukon Junior College before teaching rural school for several years. On June 5, 1940, she married Barthell Bakkum at the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. They farmed together on several farms east of Waukon before moving to town in 1995.

Muriel was a faithful member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible Study and was a part of Ladies Aid and WELCA. She was also a member of the Browning Club. Muriel had a life-long love of music. She played the piano some, although she was more proud of her daughter Beverly's accomplishments in that area, and loved to go dancing with Barthell and follow his activities with the local Barbershoppers.

Survivors include her 3 children, Duane Bakkum of Monona, IA, Beverly (Paul) Smoker of Pittsford, NY, and Keith (Carol) Bakkum of Waukon; 5 grandchildren, Andrew, Evan, Chad, Jason and Callen; a brother, Earl (Vivian) Iverson of Waterville, IA; and a sister, Darlene Cecchetti of Cheswick, PA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Barthell, who died in 1997; an infant son, Gary LaVerne; and 5 brothers, Ordell, Arden, Irvin, and Herman Iverson, as well as an infant brother.

Casketbearers are Chad and Jason Bakkum, Evan Smoker, Rex Blake, Robert Hanson, Jeff Sweeney, and Scott Iverson.
