Lurene Malinda Minnie Walter passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, at the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 19 days. Funeral services were held Friday, April 18, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Reverend Steve Backett officiated, assisted by the Reverend Jim Klosterboer. Special music was provided by Marian Schutte, organist and Ronald Meyer, soloist.

Casketbearers were Alan Martins, Larry Martins, Mark Martins, John Klosterboar, Rick Gunderson, and Charlie Meyer. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. An Easter Star service was held Thursday, April 17 at the funeral home.

Lurene Malinda Minnie Walter was born July 26, 1915 in Postville to William F. and Matilda (Meyer) Baltz. She was baptized August 22, 1915 and confirmed August 12, 1928, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Lurene attended the Grand Meadow School and graduated from Postville High School in 1932.

April 24, 1935 Lurene was married to Victor Henry Walter in St. Paul Lutheran Church. They farmed for a year near Postville. They operated the Locker Plant in Postville and in 1940 opened a restaurant in Clermont. In 1942 they moved to Dayton, OH, where Lurene worked at Wright Patterson Field as a Clerk-Typist. In August they were transferred to Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, where she was employed as an Administrative Analyst. They moved back to Postville in 1948 to operate a restaurant and gas station. They built the Pines Motel in 1955 and worked there until their retirement in 1974. Since 1963 they had been spending some time in Sarasota, FL.

Lurene was a seamstress and enjoyed helping her husband with the planning of their building projects. She was an adventurous person and soloed an airplane at Clermont in 1941, went parasailing in Acapulco in 1987, and had a hot air balloon ride in Florida in 1989. She learned to pilot a boat and traveled to over 50 countries on six continents, many islands and a trip around the world in 1993.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Joann (Bernie) Martins, Vivian Baltz, Patricia Richardson, Corine Schmidt, Murial Boetts, Robin Walter, Cyndi Johnson, Thomas Mueller, Tammie Mueller, Pastor James Klosterboer, Lisa Klosterboer, and John Klosterboer; four grandnieces; nine grandnephews; five great-grandnieces; and three great-grandnephews.

Lurene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; her grandparents, Charles and Sophia (Stopperan) Meyer, and Carl and Minnie (Beulow) Baltz; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Marie Baltz; a nephew, Duane Baltz; and a great nephew, Brian Martins.

Lurene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and the Women of the ELCA. She sang in the church choir, sang solos for church and for funerals and weddings and played the piano and organ. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Past Matron of Postville Chapter 1956, and Past Worthy Matron of the OES of the Grand Chapter of Iowa. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in 2004.
