He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he remained a lifelong member. Maury graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1953 and later from the University of Iowa. During high school and over the summers during college, he worked at Peterson Hardware in Waukon.
In 1965 Maury graduated from Creighton University Law School in Omaha, NE, where he was a member of the law fraternity. Along with being an attorney, Maury operated farms in the Waukon and Harpers Ferry area where he has raised cattle for many years. Maury loved his farming operations, taking excellent care of his livestock and making special efforts to be a good steward of the land.
September 9, 1961 he married Colleen Esther Mathis at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Colleen died in 1990. In 1999 he married Angie Schulte, they later amicably divorced but remained dedicated friends.

In his younger days he traveled with his dad and spent time at the Mississippi River fishing and skiing. He enjoyed hunting, keeping up with current affairs, especially in politics and science, and was an avid reader and WWII history buff. He enjoyed playing pool for numerous teams in various area towns throughout the years. Special times with his family were also very important to him.
