Leslie "Windy" Masonhall

Leslie "Windy" Masonhall, of Postville, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the Northgate Care Center in Waukon. He was 87.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, with the Reverend Gary Catterson officiating. Special music was provided by Beverly Bacon, organist, and Kim Schutte, soloist. Casket bearers were the grandchildren: Monica Nordheim, Carmen Stephan, Lynette Klimesh, Katie Anderson, Kristin Anderson, Kevin Anderson, Amy Bast, Leslie Kramer, and Eric Kramer. Honorary casket bearers were Rodney Livingood, Robert Heckmann, Eugene Severn, Steve Folsom, Karl Casten, Clarence Everman, Terry Hogan, Michael Blakeman, B. J. Blakeman, and Richard Brainard. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Leslie Winfield "Windy" Masonhall was born December 2, 1920, in Des Moines to Leslie James and Esther (Hathaway) Masonhall. He graduated from Postville High School in 1938 and went to work at the Postville Baking Company, which was owned and operated by his parents. Windy was married to Betty Ruth Wenger on June 28, 1941. To this union three daughters were born.

Windy entered the Army on March 16, 1943, and served until October 21, 1945. He served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater. Following his discharge, Windy returned to his job at the Postville Bakery. He took ownership of the bakery in 1966. He remained an active businessman in the community until his retirement in 1990.

Following his long and early work day, Windy would often be seen sitting on the park bench in front of the bakery. As people passed by they would stop to pass the time of day, and some would even join him on the bench as they discussed local and national news. Windy liked to fish and play cards with his family and friends. He and Betty also liked to attend local dances.

Windy was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Postville and had served as a Deacon. He was also a member of the Arthur F. Brandt American Legion Post.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Matthew Anderson; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Wenger and Lee Brainard.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; three daughters, Judy (Burnell) Koth, Postville, Barbara (Lynn) Anderson, Mason City, and Wendy (Dale) Kramer, Baldwin, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Monica (Steve) Nordheim, Carmen Stephan, Lynette (Corey) Klimesh, Katie Anderson, Kristin Anderson, Kevin Anderson, Amy (Adam) Bast, Leslie (Lori) Kramer, Eric (Kelly) Kramer; six great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Garrett Nordheim, Cole and Shaun Klimesh, Sophia Kramer and Gavin Kramer. Also surviving is a sister, Maxine (Glen) Blakeman, Topeka, Kan., and several nieces and nephews.
