Single Vehicle Accident In Texas Claims Life Of Waukon College Student

A single vehicle accident at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 17 near San Antonio, TX claimed the life of 20-year old Lindsey Anne McMillan, daughter of Mike and Sue McMillan of Waukon. McMillan was one of three backseat passengers thrown from a sport utility vehicle traveling south on Interstate 37, about 65 miles south of San Antonio, when the rear tire on the passenger side of the vehicle went flat, sending the vehicle rolling into the grass median.

According to information reported to McMillan's family by authorities and eye witnesses, the tire failure resulted in the vehicle swerving back and forth on the pavement when it appeared the rim of the wheel finally caught the pavement and sent the vehicle rolling one and one-half times, ejecting McMillan and two other passengers seated next to her, all of whom were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the incident.

McMillan was airlifted from the scene to University Health System in San Antonio, TX, where she was immediately placed on life support but eventually died with her family by her side Tuesday, March 18 from the massive head trauma she suffered in the accident. Another of the thrown passengers, a male, was also airlifted and remains a patient at University Hospital with head trauma. The other ejected passenger, a female, walked away from the accident with no serious injuries, as did the driver and a front seat passenger.

McMillan was a sophomore nursing student at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She and a group of friends, including her partner in a laboratory class at Iowa and some of that lab partner's friends from the Knoxville area, were traveling to South Padre Island for a spring break vacation when the accident occurred. Authorities report that alcohol was not involved in the incident.

The family relays that a positive impact has emerged from McMillan's death via her wishes to be an organ donor. Her heart was given to a 52-year old man in dire need of a transplant and one of her kidneys was transplanted into a 13-year old boy. Her family says her other kidney, as well as her liver and pancreas were also donated, but as of this printing had not been placed with any recipients.

McMillan was a 2006 graduate of Waukon High School. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Her obituary appears on Page 3A of this week's issue of The Standard.
