KENNETH E. MEEKER 1920-2003
Kenneth E. Meeker, 83, of 620 36th Street NE, died Friday, October 10, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services at 11 AM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Burial with Military rites in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 5 to 7 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife of over 58 years Winnifred, two daughters Barbara Meeker of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Reinette Miller of Phoenix, Arizona, a grandson Matthew Miller of Ashland, Oregon, a sister Lois Fleming of Iowa, two sisters-in-law Darlene Cox and Pauline LaVelle, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother Fay Meeker, and a half sister Vivian Allison.
Kenneth was born September 13, 1920 in Waterloo, Iowa to Chester and Alma Schoonmaker Meeker. He graduated from Postville High School where he was educated to be a teacher. He married Winnifred B. LaVelle on May 17, 1945 in Decorah, Iowa.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was a machinist in the drill department at Link Belt Speeder for 7 and a half years, and retired from the Post Office after 27 and a half years. He volunteered with the Jefferson High School booster club, enjoyed family vacations, fishing, gardening, and landscaping, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed bowling in several leagues and in tournaments. Kenneth had a special gift of conversation and sense of humor, and always gave great attention to detail. Winnifred B. Meeker, 78, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids died Monday, January 10, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services: 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home Wednesday from 4 PM to 6 PM. The Rev. James Langley of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Meeker of Grand Junction, CO, and Reinette Miller of Phoenix, AZ; a sister, Darlene Cox of Cedar Rapids; a grandchild, Matthew Miller of Central Point, OR; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth in 2003; a sister, Alvera LaVelle; and a brother, Robert LaVelle.
Winnifred was born April 30, 1926 in Postville the daughter of Ashley W. and Barbara M. (Steffans) LaVelle. She married Kenneth E. Meeker on May 17, 1945 in Decorah.
Winnifred dedicated her life to her family. She will be especially remembered for always trying to do her best and for her spirit of never giving up.
Her family would like to thank the Hiawatha Care Center and Mercy Intensive Care Unit for their care and compassion during the last year.
