Anna Thoma

Anna Thoma, the daughter of John Thoma and Dorothea Ann Ruckdaschel Thoma, was born on March 8, 1874 in Postville, next to what is now the V&J Cafe. She passed away at the Postville Hospital on May 28, 1960 at the age of 86 years, two months and 20 days. At the time of her death, she was one of the oldest native born residents of the community.

She was baptized in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on May 26, 1874 and was confirmed in her Christian faith in 1888. It is noted that her grandfather, Conrad Thoma, was one of the leaders in the founding of this church in the spring of 1871, and became the first president of the corporation on January 16, 1880.

She was the only daughter in a family that was always active in the community affairs and contributed to the growth of the community as active businessmen for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three brothers, J. M. Thoma, William C. Thoma and Fred J. Thoma, all of Postville.

Anna gave devoted care to her mother for many years until she died in 1934. In October 1957 she fell and broke her hip, and after spending some months in the Postville Hospital, made her home at the Erbe Nursing Home, until she was taken to the Postville Hospital just previous to Easter this year.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred J. Thoma of Postville, and the following nieces and nephews: Arthur J. Thoma of Postville; Neeling Thoma of Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. John (Hattie) Casten of Postville; Mrs. Donald (Ethel) Folsom of Postville, Mrs. Lloyd (Bertha) Palmer of Anoka, Minnesota, Harlan Thoma of Des Moines and Delores Thoma Scholtes of Sioux City, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on May 31 at 3:00 p.m. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery with The Rev. Charles E. Witt, officiating.
