Esther Sweat

Esther L. Sweat, 95, of Lansing and formerly of New Albin died Thursday evening, July 12, 2007 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, July 17 at Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing, with Pastor Roger Graham officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing.

Esther was born August 25, 1911 to Otto and Jonetta (Jensen) Peterson of rural Lansing. She was baptized and confirmed at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Lansing. She attended rural grade school, and graduated from the Lansing Public High School with a normal training certificate. She taught rural schools at the Bergen School of Bee, MN, Evergreen School of Postville, Ferring School, May's Prairie School and Three Corners School a total of fifteen years.

September 4, 1942 she married Levi L. Sweat at Tyler, TX. While there, Esther worked at the Blackstone Hotel Dining Room until 1944. At that time Levi left to serve in the military in Italy and she returned to Lansing and worked at the Lansing Button Co. until she retired. After she and Levi retired they purchased a home in New Albin, where she lived until she moved to Thornton Manor after brief stays with relatives.

Esther enjoyed gardening, and many friends and family enjoyed the fruits of her labors. She also enjoyed fishing, her many friends, her family of sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and all their interests. She was a great cook who loved to cook for family, friends and her husband. For many years she was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Waukon.

She is survived by a sister, Minnie Troendle of Lansing; as well as her husband's brother, Clarence Sweat; and her husband's sister, Lorraine Hirth.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Carl and wife Anna Peterson and Hjalmer and wife Cleo Peterson; four sisters, Ellen (William) Dee, Johanna (Gayle) McCoy, Jennie (Archie) U'Ren, and Martina (Eugene) Wood; and a brother-in-law, Theodore Troendle.

Honorary casketbearers were her sister-in-law, Lorraine Hirth, and all her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Casket bears were Robert Troendle, James Brennan, Martin Brennan, Michael Brennan, John Wood, David Olson, Walter Wood and Kenneth Wood.
