Ellwood M. Vickery, 86, of Opp, AL died Friday, June 22, 2007 at Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp. A military funeral service was held Monday, June 25 at Wyatt Funeral Home in Opp. Burial was in Opp City Cemetery. Casketbearers were United States Army soldiers from Fort Rucker, AL.
Ellwood Millard Vickery was born July 11, 1920 in rural Waukon, the son of Willard Vickery and Melva (Gress) Vickery. He attended rural schools and in 1940 enlisted in the military. During his 22-year military career, he was stationed various places in the South Pacific and Japan. In 1963, he was discharged from Fort Benning, GA after spending several years there making prosthetics for injured military personnel and their families. In 1964 he began his second career, one that would span 35 years as owner and operator of Vick's Barber Shop in Opp.
Ellwood was a member of the Baptist Church and American Legion in Opp. For years he was a paramedic on the Opp Rescue Squad as well as a reserve sheriff's officer for Covington County, AL.
Survivors include his wife Lorene of Opp; one daughter, Karen Darling, and one son, Millard Vickery, both of New Albin; and one sister, Fern Roffman of Waukon.
